So, what is the fix for too much end play? Any instructions around?

If that is your trouble, a machine shop is usually needed to rebuild the thrust surface. A bronze thrust surface can be purchased from the different suppliers. It fits into the block.

I vote for piston slap! Rod knocking would not go away and would be more pronounced under load!

Piston slap won't stop until the engine warms up. Rod knock due to too much clearance will not go away, but miss-alignment knock will.
