Default Clutch Noise

I have a 40 sedan that is basically original. With the clutch pedal fully depressed, all you hear is the purring of the flathead engine. Once I release the pedal all the way up I hear a growl from the transmission area. I thought it might be the throw out bearing but I'm not sure it spins when the pedal is all the way up. The transmission is in neutral while I'm doing this.

I don't know much about these old Fords. Could one of you help me?

Probably not a throwout bearing, it turns with clutch depressed. Have you checked the grease/oil in the transmission? If it has oil in it, i suspect it needs to come out. Maybe input bearing is growling.

I agree with 40cpe. Check oil first, maybe drain transmission and see if it has evidence of a bearing going away by silver in the oil. Next up, remove it. Could be all you need is new bearings and a shaft for the cluster. Is it a high mile trans? There are a small limited number of things it could be when it makes noise in neutral.

The main input shaft and the counter shaft cluster gear both remain turning when the trans is in neutral and the clutch is engaged. Any of the applicable bearings could be going south.
