I can see now why you want to retain that ignition setup you have....

Are you using solid, stranded wire, core spark plug wire or something else like resistor?

Great looking engine. Should perform well. The coils - did you put covers on them or did they come with the checkered colors?

My "crew chief" gets the credit for those. Found at the local hobby shop. Model airplane builders use it, comes in mylar sheets. The caps came from "Welch's " jelly jars.

Thanks for the compliment.!

I like the appearance of the coil covers and your “crew chief” is commended for her work. What would happen if you remove the covers and use your heat gun on the coils when the engine is at 200 degs? Ie, are the covers the cause of your problem? Heat transfer from the coils blocked by the covers? Try it and see what happens. You might also keep in mind that the engine is new and needs breaking in and I think it will run hotter during the break in period - mine did with a fan. Now runs 170 without a fan, but keep moving. But I am not in a city either. And I am using stock mains in 97s and 71 pvs. I had the same problems that you are experiencing. I had been running 43 mains and 65 pvs.
Lousy performance - ran lean.

Did it get fixed? What was the problem?

We're not exactly sure. We went though the entire ign system, testing all the units and connections that might be causing the problem and eliminating those that were't. In the process we finally we're able to obtain fire at the plugs, which is of course what we were looking for. I don't think that it was one single item , but a combination of things, put together by the builder.! If We knew, we could probably write a book on the subject The good news, is that I' am able to keep my "H&C" ignition system, which is and was my primary concern.!

We are now focused on the fuel system, (which includes finding decent fuel to burn), and I think that we have that solved also. Tomorrow is test Day.!
