Default 33/34 dips in cowl for hood support.

In this thread

http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/s...highlight=1933

It mentions another thread where it states that the 34 has the dips in the cowl to support the opened hood.

My car is a 33 and has the dips.

Is the statement correct or in correct? If correct is my car an oddball? Or maybe someone found the 34 style dips useful and modified my cowl with a couple of carefully aimed hammer blows??

What do the factory dips look like??

Lots of questions - here's a couple of pics of my car.

I also posted the same question on the hamb - apologies to those that frequent both forums.

Mart.

To be honest I cannot detect the "dent" in the cowl on your car with the hood resting on the cowl. I believe 33 does not have the "dent" but the 34 does. Yours could be a late 33. I do not know the specific date that this body change was made.

The answer is yes - it is correct . If you look at your firewall lip under the " dip " you will see it is not notched like a 34 . The notch on a 34 firewall is for the dip in the cowl top . The ribs on either side of the hood lacing are different 33-34 also . Notice yours don't have the gaps like the 34 in the pics . The cowl sides are way different also and I'm not talking about the hood catches . The dented cowl top on 33's is fairly common . Two of mine have had it done to them also . One was simply done by cutting a 1/4" notch with a hacksaw and bending the inboard lip down slightly . Yours looks to be the old hammer blow thing . Merry X-mas and I'm getting that look so see-ya .

The cowl (dents) are much more noticeable than I see in your pics 33 Ford had flared place on the radiator. In the same area the 33 did not have a screen in the cowl vent. The screen was approved for production the last week of Feb.All together there were over 60 changes from the 33.The serial number for the first 33 Ford v8 was 212239 and last was 224451.the first number for 33 Ford 4 cylinder 5179580 and the last was 5187129. The frame number is located on top of left frame rail in front of the cowl Hope this helps Lee34

Thanks guys, I knew there was an anomaly, I can see now the dips are home made.

They work quite well, I may put a blob of weld on the outer part to give a more positive stop.

My radiator must have came from a 34 as it has no provision for hood support. It also had the remnants of 34 grille brackets on it.

I like this detective work.

Merry Christmas!

Mart.

I bought the hood kit for my 34 pickup, it allows you to have both sides open at the same time without worring about them falling. #a16613 at Mac's $25.

Lee,

With respect, according to Ford's Rouge Engine Plant production log, the first '33 engine was numbered 207867 and the first '33 engine with aluminum cylinder heads was numbered 208788. Both of those engine/transmission assemblies were stamped with a 40 prefix, a practice that persisted for several hundred engine numbers before the use of the 18 prefix was reinstated. I know of at least one surviving '33 chassis with a 40-prefix number below 208788.

Here is what my 33 looks like.
To me it seems mine has a hammer job done as well.

You are correct. That was done by the brothers Jack and Leg.

now I need to go take a closer look at mine.
I have a '33 Cabriolet, and it has indents for the hood to sit.

On my 33 I have the accessory cowl tool box fitted with the sliding lids.
On these I put a little rubber pad and rest the hood edge on that.
