I'm sure you have checked, but I will ask anyway, is your compression gauge operating properly?

Don't spend a lot of time "guessing". You're going to tear it apart anyway, right?
If you don't plan om tearing it down then you can spend a lot of time and money chasing the "gremlins"... Either way, "Enjoy the adventure"... Chap

Took the valve cover plate off today and saw 4 sticking valves. Took the head off and with a little persuasion got all valves freed up and moving. One stuck valve in each cylinder will certainly give zero compression in all 4 cylinders

I guess the valves really weren't going up and down.
