Stromberg eFire Dizzy

Has anyone tried the new eFire distributor? It looks like another top-quality part from Stromberg, though at nearly $400 I question whether it's worth the upgrade over a stock crab unit with mechanical innards. You can buy A LOT of points and condensers for that much scratch!

I'm sure that is an excellent unit, but why not just convert your crab using a Pertronix trigger. Save a few hundred bucks

Kahuna, currently I have no plans on replacing my car's tried-and-true crab-style distributor. I was just curious if anyone here on the Barn had tried this new unit and what its benefits might be. Looks like another great piece of engineering from Stromberg.

Mechanical advance 22 degrees just like the factory crab, uses a electronic module in lieu of contacts. Looks good , i ran a few when they were in development, success will depend on coil being used by end user.

I have done about 1000miles on mine and I can pull toward 4000rpm, which I couldn't manage on the divers helmet I have here. I'd like to find a stock crab for comparison.

I didn't see any coil options on the website, what coil is used for 6 volt?

I wanted one 4 or 5 months back, but couldn't get solid answers. I bought a stock crab.

Instructions say coil with a resistor in circuit but it wouldn't fire so Clive at Stromberg said try removing it. So I'm running a regular Bosch blue 6v coil. You also need modern plug leads, no copper cores.

What advance curve do they have? The page says "The advance rate (and max total advance) is tuned specifically to suit the flathead V8 motor".

I´m curious why someone would take the time and money and develope a product that is less advanced then the original...
If they did a new crab distributor with a modern vacuum advance system that would be one thing.
I wouldn´t spend the money when rebuilding the original crab takes less money and you end up with a better distributor.

I agree, i rebuild, test and run the 1942-48 "crab" distributor, for people and myself.
It`s hard to see any gains in this new unit, why replace the best distributor ever made for a modern unit which is hard to trace errors in, pluss it is missing the vacuum load brake.

Just installed one on a 3.9l, with isky max 1, was running great for 10 min and died...
Stromberg still not respond to me. I use a 1.5 ohm pertronix coil, with carbon spark plug wires. wired from the coil with good 12volts... don t understand what went wrong...

Any help will be appreciated

No ballast resistor? I would guess you need 3.0 ohm in that circuit, 1.5 ohm is normally for a 6v system. You can get 3.0 ohm coils or use a 1.5 ohm coil with a 1.5 ohm ballast resistor.
