Karl,
If you look on Trade Me. New Zealand think you can get a set for about $100.00 NZ. Some of those shipping charges are unreal. The place that sells them is in North Island. Phil NZ |

Re: Suggestions for shipping an early Ford transmission
Thanks to those who have responded with additional comments and suggestions.
Since I enjoy designing, building or making things, I decided to sketch out a design for a wooden shipping crate, and then compare this to Mac VanPelt's crate design on his website. I will be building one of the two designs, or maybe some combination of both designs, and check shipping by Fastenal and FedEx to determine the best way to go. Shipping is getting crazy, especially international shipping, and it doesn't look like this situation is going to get better in the forseeable future.

I just got a Model B block shipped by Fastenal from the midwest. Took a week and cost $100. All the seller did was take two old ratchet straps and strap it to a pallet. Fastenal loaded it for me with a fork lift. Keep in mind this was mostly a boat anchor block I bought for the Crank and Cam. If it was a decent Transmission I'd build a box, but still ship it Fastenal. I'm around the beltway where they are close though.

Re: Suggestions for shipping an early Ford transmission
Maybe I was lucky, but I received a 50 pound Buick transmission from Florida to NJ just a couple of weeks ago.
Some Styrofoam in a cardboard box and UPS delivered it to my door for about $60. Any packing beyond that (certainly recommended) and you are practically guaranteed success.
