Default Starter Bendix

Does anyone know if a faulty Bendix Drive can cause the starter to hang up?

I'd sure think it could. It would help everyone here if you could give some more details about your problem though.

First, make sure you are not getting on and off the starter while it is turning. You can fool the drive and it may hang up. When you push on the starter button, keep pushing until it starts. If you back off, let things settle down before you push again.

The starter gotten stuck when starting and had to remove the started to release the Bendix, doesn’t happen much maybe twice in a year, will try not hitting the starter switch quickly between starts, never had this happen on my other vehicle.

If you can, if the starter is still off, do some inspecting of the ring gear on the flywheel. Ring gears normally wear on a model A in 4 places, based on what cylinder the engine stop on! If the starter is already back on and working, next time it is off!

Because two revolutions of the crankshaft are required to complete a cycle, a 4 cylinder engine will have 2 worn places on the ring gear, not 4 and becasue the pinion engages from the rear, that wear is difficult to see from the front (throught the starter mounting hole)

You don’t have to remove the starter to free it up. Just put the car in third gear and push it backwards. Never forward.

I have had this problem happen to me on two occasions, i.e. Bendix/starting gear locked, starter failed to respond even though battery not dead. (As it happens, both occasions happened with a starter using the 'new/modern' style Bendix gear.)

The method described by JacksonIII worked both times for me to free it up.

When this happened, I wouldn't have characterized it as the result of a 'faulty' Bendix, just bad luck. That said, about a year later, I switched back to an 'original' style Bendix, and haven't look back.

Best of luck, Andrew

If the armature shaft is bent , it can cause starter hang up . A bent armature shaft is caused by starter kick back . If the timing is too advanced or if the driver forgot to retard the spark when cranking will cause starter kick back . Starter kick back can mimic a weak battery , but its bad for the armature shaft . I test my starters before installation . I set the starter up in a bench vise and either use a battery charger or battery to power the starter for the test . With the Bendix removed , if the armature shaft is slightly blurry when the starter spins , the shaft is bent . It may be worth the time to try .
