My engine builder tells me that the Police Interceptor camshaft had a different timing sequence than the stock cam. True? Anybody know?

I acquired an Elgin grind that was represented as their version of the Police Interceptor, but my builder tells me that once he installed it in my 272 motor, this cam has the same timing order as stock, and he was surprised.

Can anybody shed light on what he's talking about? I had never heard of the firing order changing from camshaft grind to grind. Thanks.

I think your engine builder has been smoking Fan Belts.

There has never been a change in Y-Block firing order unless someone ground a custom cam for some reason that eludes me way??

Unless your builder is referring to VALVE TIMING as opposed to IGNITION TIMING in which case an Intercetor cam should be different than stock. I don't know the specs but for example the intakes opening sooner, more duration, etc.

You mention firing order,timing sequence and timing order.

These are all different cycles and events connected to a cams function.

If you are just curious about the firing order,it would be the same as stock in a Police Interceptor engine.

The only firing order change I know of in Ford V8's is between the 289/302 and the 351 Windsor. The 351 Windsor had a unique firing order.

I think Herman Munster has the best advice! I would never mention anything like that in passing. I would open a book to find out the answer.

Maybe he was thinking he had a scrub motor cam with the 7-4 firing order change? I agree with Herman Munster & Old Don.

The scrub engines with the 7-4 swap makes it the same firing order as the YBlock and the Flat head V8. Depending upon the year you're looking at for the camshaft timing specs, then the 1957 YBlock 2V & 4V specs should be in the ball park for the Police Interceptor specs. See if these values for the '57 camshaft helps. IO-18 BTDC, IC-58 ABDC, EO-66 BBDC, EC-10 ATDC.
