Methanol is cheaper to distill than ethanol and a lot of it comes from natural gas these days. NASCAR and Indy racing no longer use the methanol. They use a blend that is closer to E85 now. They get around 3 miles to the gallon though so the pit crews stay busy. Methanol is toxic enough that it's not used all that much.

Anyone with a new flex fuel vehicle that wants to use E-85 take note that the engine life will be cut to only about 65,000 miles. So, there is no savings. It's a waste any way you look at it.

I had the same problem with a vehicle that had run on propane for 40K miles. It was starting to lose compression at 80K even though it was converted back to gasoline but the damage was already done. E85 was sort of a flash in the pan. I haven't seen it offered around hear for quite a while.

My grandpa Benjamin Bailey Sisson was selling model Ts in Wareham a few years earlier at Sisson's garage. He grew up in West Harwich. On Sisson road. While the Cape is a zoo in the Summer, sometimes I look at real estate listings, just because I have always had a heart for the cape. Was it Patty Page that sang 'Old Cape Cod" ?
