Default Info on diaphragm clutch for Model A

I have had some email inquiries about the 10" diaphragm clutches that John Lavoy wrote about in the Spring 2010 Model A Times.

I've put up a web page with more information.

Joe, Thanks for the excellent follow-up details!

You have noted the Seco fingers to be at a steeper angle than the Luk. This must have some effect on the change of pedal pressure through its travel. I have two questions: 1) How does the pedal pressure of the Seco and Lux compare at two points- the friction point and fully depressed? 2) After cutting and installed with a new disc, what is the distance (height) of the fingers from the flywheel surface? Is it the same for the Seco and Luk?

Mike, I'll have to finish the pressure gauge I started building about 6 months ago to answer the pedal questions with any accuracy. One might suppose that the Seco clutch would take more pressure at the top of the stroke and that they would be about the same at the bottom, but that would require some assumptions to be made that may or may not be true.

When I finish the pressure gauge I'll make the rounds of club members' cars and get info on stock, V-8, and diaphragm clutches, and add that to the web page. Pedal pressures on stock and V-8 plates vary widely as has been discussed here in the past, depending on what springs were used in manufacture or rebuilding, but the range of data points will be interesting. Maybe I'll see if Marco would be willing to check the pressures on his NOS and low-miles original clutches, which he says are quite easy to operate.

Height of the fingers is another good question. I'll have to round up some more covers to get answers as I don't think I can get a measurement in the car. Right now all the ones I've worked on are installed. All I can say about the height right now is that the clutch adjustments required only a touch-up on two of the cars. Not sure about the other two.

I'll post again when I have more information to offer.

Joe

Hi Joe - I've had little luck searching for the clutch numbers here in the UK - don't suppose you know the original fitment?

I recently installed a diaphragm clutch made for a late model Mustang. It is much smoother than the early V8 clutch that I took out, eliminating most of the chatter that my tudor had, and it was bad! It does have an odd feel when releasing, kind of like it is going "over center".

As part of my F150 OD install, I used a diaphragm pressure plate out of a 86 Ford Thunderbird 2.3 liter 4 cylinder turbo. It is attached to a lightened (34lbs) Model A flywheel.

I'm not having any luck here, either. Both the suppliers I've used before are unable to supply more.

I'm now working on a flywheel that I will drill for a Chevy S-10 clutch cover--SACHS BBC1904--that is supposed to work with an A clutch disc. I'll be adding info on that to my web page when I get it done.

Al - That looks exactly like the Ford Sierra clutch cover I had out at our local parts centre - but I don't think the hole centre is large enough for a Model A box?

Dick Spadaro has started a clutch p/p thread on the EV8 site, addressing some problems with the EV8 set ups. Might make informative reading .
