Coincidentally, I got an email from Haggerty today asking for pre war cars for a movie they are going to shoot in Buffalo. Seems the movie company contacted them. After reading this thread I would tend to pass, and then they said they were planning on shooting in February-so a definite no. I doubt they are going to find many people who are willing to rent out their car in February in Buffalo!

I had to scratch my head about that what. Looking under the hood he could detect a problem with the timing chain? Pretty good mechanic!

I saw it at the theatre in one sitting. The time went by quickly for me.


What amazed me is the number of old trucks they were able to assemble, especially the B Model Macks, all in one place. Maybe they did some CG tricks with that, though.

I guess the timing chain is also located in the back of the motor also...maybe.

A long retired work mate of mine owned a 39 pickup that was hired for a Europa petrol ad ( gas to you north american folk). Well they took it down the West coast of the south Island,NZ for filming and one of the crew rolled it after going out on the piss with it to a pub one night. The owner Bill was not impressed. Insurance paid out and he bought the wreck back. I owned a very original 1961 IIIB Humber 80 ( NZ badge engineered Hillman Minx). I was approached about it for a TV program...I said "thanks but no thanx".

A couple years ago PBS did an episode of "American Experience" on Bonnie & Clyde. They hired me to drive my '33 Fordor for some extra shots. Worked out great! I asked them many questions prior. They were professional. Would do it again.

I used to have a decent '54 Chevy convertible until I rented it to the studio that made "The Hunter".

I knew a guy who 's brother in-law was a location scout & was "in" with the prop guys and vehicle guys. He would always "just so happen" to have the cars that the producers would need for the next up coming movies. What he did was sell the cars to the production company & in the sale contract had a clause that stated when they where done with the vehicle they would return it to him & he would buy it back for $1. Obviously he never "sold" any of his good cars. It was a "win, win" situation every time.

One day shoots where you get to be on set & sometimes drive the cars aren't so bad. Can even be sort of fun.
But i have heard horror stories about what they do to cars they use long term.

There's no way I would loan my car for a movie, I worked to long and hard to get it like it is. I would probably drive it myself if they needed cars on the street, I bet no one on the set would know how to drive a overdrive anyway.

Personally I would do it. Certainly depends on what is asked. Easy to find out. I guarantee there is a contract.

I remember hearing a story about the BF Goodrich tire ads when they had different sports and muscle cars wearing the product. The one with the '65 Shelby used a real original paint car. The owner was told the special blue paint they sprayed on it for the photos would "peel right off". Well, some did, some not so much... and the rattle can black over the original Koni orange shocks and bare suspension parts didn't clean up at all.

They ended up doing a complete restore on the car for him. But that original paint's now long gone.

Not worth the trouble or risk I'd say.

Some of you may have heard of the show Portlandia that was shot here in Portland Oregon. They wanted to use my Model T huckster on one of the episodes. Well that didn't go very far when I told them I would have to drive it myself. LOL I don't think they would have figured the 3 pedals out anyway.

Should have let them try. They might have either learnt it, or relented & let you drive it.
