Default 1931 pre-production V8

so i saw this at the henry ford this past weekend, while i was in detroit for the autorama (at which the 32 hot rod my shop's been working on for the past month and a half won "best overall traditional hot rod"). ANYHOW...not real surprising to see a prototype block, but it was smaller than a V8 60! anyone know more about all it?

There was a small V8 built in the T era for Model T Fords.

Very interesting. You can see a lot of the design elements that went through to the production item. Valves and guides inserted as an assembly, exhausts routed through the block, siamesed in the middle. Luckily other elements were discarded. Siamesed inlet ports, restricted exhaust ports etc.

Never seen one like that before, thanks for showing the pic.

Mart.

I think the end exhaust ports might have it over what became the production standard round hole. It looks like the back of that port might be filled and smoother thus removing a source of restriction.

A couple other observations are the fact that the bellhousing extension is very short somewhere the true early production engines and the later 8BA style.

Also notice that decks are perfectly smooth, I think I like that better. The orientation and location of the intake and exhaust valves looks to be better as well. See how they are rotated to be more inline with their corresponding port. That looks like it is a more efficient situation from a flow standpoint. Hmmm much to be learned from Ford's early experiments.
