Lightbulb Route 66

My Dad always said "If you don't ask then you don't get" - so here goes -

One of my lifetime ambitions is to drive Route 66 in an old car. I have a '29 Phaeton but it is with me in the UK - a long way from Route 66.

So here's the question - is there anybody thinking of doing the route in the next two years who needs somebody to split costs and the driving??

There you go - I asked!

I did mine when I was 66 in my 66 Vette. It was a great trip.

I hope you find a travel partner. Driving Route 66 in a '29 Phaeton is a trip to remember. We finished a 9200 mile road trip this past year which included Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica Pier. By the way, we drove a '29 Model A Phaeton. (See Avatar) If you want to discover some of what we saw along the way, we posted a travel blog for friends and family. Here is the link:

http://blog.travelpod.com/travel-blo...-a/1/tpod.html

Do it soon if you can and leave yourself three weeks to do it right.
Good Day!

If you do take the trip, buy the guide book in advance and read up on it. Many portions are no longer existent and some roads no longer bear any reference to the original highway. When I drove through St. Louis I was delighted to see they had Historic 66 signs going through the city. That was the exception rather than the norm.

I am also seeing more signs referencing the Lincoln Highway which is also good.

I noticed when I was in Missouri this past summer that the "Historic Route 66" signs were quite prevalant.

For your reference: A one-way RoRo from Southampton-New York with Wallenius Wilhelmsen is approx 1300 USD. And then you need to drive to Chicago before connecting with 66.

That is a great plan, I drove my phaeton on route 66 in 1966, here is a picture from that trip! Keep me in the loop if you do plan on doing the trip we could write it up for you and I will try and find someone who would be interested in splitting the costs etc.

Thanks for the feedback so far. Did I say, well chested blondes (female) would get priority but there's plenty of time for that . This is just a germ of an idea but I would certainly love to do it 2015/16. A Model A would be so much more civilised than a Harley.
Thanks for the advice on the guide books - I'll get on to that. As for timescale, I was planning on two weeks door to door from the UK. Shipping my car is certainly an option but the steering wheel is on the wrong side .

We ran the Summer Tour to Texas along Route 66. In preparation I interviewed Michael Wallis, who wrote the book "The Mother Road". It gives you some insight to how the road evolved and things to look for on your travels. A very good read and available at Amazon.

At that pace I'm guessing you won't have much time for anything, most folks reckon on around 200 miles a day............

k

here's our schedule (FWIW) planning on doing it in August...........
