Fire extinguisher

This is worth a read, you can reach your own conclusions. But it does remind us a fire extinguisher should be in all the cars.

I remember in HS (right after the WAR BETWEEN the STATES) of the rich neat kids having one mounted on the trans tunnel right behind the HURST SHIFTER between the bucket seats.

I learned about the Element from the Jay Leno video, and bought two for now. I've carried Halons for many years but the Elements will save the check and recharge costs dry chemical and Halons have to go through every few years. Our kitchen will get the next one.

Thats a pretty good extinguisher,a lot lighter than the old style. I think I am going to get me at least one. Thanks for sharing the video.

Yeah, but the newer one has no class/romance.

Gotta have that extinguisher between the seats and hope your girlfriend doesn't land on it ...

Kultulz, I remember those little chrome extinguishers. Too small to do any good, but we used to say "if it won't go, chrome it"

As to the other comments.........therapy perhaps?

Just like any piece of fifty-dollar rust bucket you would buy, a set of CRAGARS always makes it look better and adds at least a basic 25HP.

Had a small one in the kitchen ever since the '70's and never used it. It probably aint no good anymore, just a decoration hanging on the wall.
Never caught a car on fire yet, but in 1985, I overfilled my Clinton Lawn mower with gas. While I was moving, some gas spilled through the tank cap and shot flames 10 ft high. Luckily, I was right next to the garden hose, so I put the fire out with the garden hose. The mower wasn't hurt at all and kept running. I finished mowing the lawn and used that mower a few more years. I believe it was an early '70's mower and it had no safety controls on it. The engine was supposed to stop when you pulled the throttle all the way back, but it didn't, so I used to carry a hammer in my belt so that when I wanted to stop the motor, I pulled the hammer out and touched the hammer head between the spark plug terminal to the engine head.

Thanks for the link to the article, miker. Looks interesting. I personally believe a larger extinguisher is really what you want, though, so you can find it while in the midst of a panic. It should be in a fixed location, too, while other smaller back up extinguishers can float to different locations a bit more. The other way to keep fires away is with a battery disconnect switch. All of my old cars have them, and they get turned off every night.

Daves55Sedan mentioned shorting out the spark plug with the hammer head. I'm older than dirt and remember when lawnmowers had a little springy piece of flat steel bolted to the cylinder head next to the plug that you used to short out the plug to stop the engine.

Just bought two of these on amazon. They arrived fast! look to be a good product and heavy for their size. They also come with a small mount for those who want it. Most car fires I become aware of are from vehicles that appeared to be in operation, not parked, aka on the side of the road. Regardless, cheap peace of mind.

Just be a trucker not toy trucks. You must have fire extinguisher, road flares, and chock blocks for starters. So it won't hurt to stuff one under your seat: because one day I simply went to Napa for a box of terminals. Ok I return and right in front of me a car rear ended another at 35 speed limit. Vehicle #2 on fire I turn on my roof emerg. lights and I sprayed the operator and interior, who was not responding, so all the stopped people got the person out while I directed traffic until help arrived. So you may not need a fire ext. or first aid kid but ya never know who will. sam
