1940 Transmission Question
Will the side plate cover on a 1940 car transmission come off while the transmission is in the car?
Prior to 1968, a previous owner welded the shift levers to the shafts. Of course, it leaks gear oil and there is no easy way to undo the welds to get the seals replaced. I will probably have to get a complete replacement assembly but I don't want to pull the transmission. Is this possible and where is a good source for the side plate? Thanks, Hugh |

Mac VP
Thanks for the advice. I only want to do this once, so I will give you a call when I get the side plate from Old...Bill and get the parts ordered. Thanks, Hugh |

Re: 1940 Transmission Question
Well, the side plate transplant went as smoothly as I suspected. A 10 minute out-of-the-car job turned into a 3 hour in-the-car job. There is barely enough room to get the side plate in and out. There is almost no room for fat fingers and ratchets. Thanks to Old..Bill for the side plate. Thanks to Mac Van Pelt for the new seals, gaskets, pins, and shift linkage bushings. Hope this cuts down on the grease on the garage floor.

Re: 1940 Transmission Question
Hugh, with all those brothers to lend you a helping hand, you should be able to get these jobs done in a few minutes. The one sitting down needs to get up and start helping out or he is off the team!!

That's the problem, they all just stand or sit around doing nothing.
