Default 1940 Transmission Question

Will the side plate cover on a 1940 car transmission come off while the transmission is in the car?

Prior to 1968, a previous owner welded the shift levers to the shafts. Of course, it leaks gear oil and there is no easy way to undo the welds to get the seals replaced. I will probably have to get a complete replacement assembly but I don't want to pull the transmission. Is this possible and where is a good source for the side plate?

Thanks,
Hugh

HUGH: I have two, one is complete and looks good ?? the other is all apart, your welcome to both, you pay for the ride. ...As for taking off in the car?? you will need 2 to 3 inch of side room to clear the shift forks coming out ?? my e-mail is [email protected] and I am in California 95547.... That's a really nice offer Old Bill!! I was going to tell Hugh that I have a 46-48 cover that I would part with but you beat me to the draw. I'm thinking if someone welded on those shift arms the heat could have ruined the seals back then.

The heat would DEFINITELY have ruined the old seals. Even if they had leather inserts rather than neoprene rubber, they would still have cooked. You are on the right track replacing the assembly. There are plenty of them around as some nice fellows have shown. You should replace the seals on the new housing. You'll also need the pins that hold the levers to the shafts, plus new gaskets. We have these in stock if you need them.

Mac VP

Thanks for the advice. I only want to do this once, so I will give you a call when I get the side plate from Old...Bill and get the parts ordered.

Thanks,
Hugh

Well, the side plate transplant went as smoothly as I suspected. A 10 minute out-of-the-car job turned into a 3 hour in-the-car job. There is barely enough room to get the side plate in and out. There is almost no room for fat fingers and ratchets. Thanks to Old..Bill for the side plate. Thanks to Mac Van Pelt for the new seals, gaskets, pins, and shift linkage bushings. Hope this cuts down on the grease on the garage floor.

Hugh, with all those brothers to lend you a helping hand, you should be able to get these jobs done in a few minutes. The one sitting down needs to get up and start helping out or he is off the team!!

That's the problem, they all just stand or sit around doing nothing.
