I haven't been posting on the FordBarn for a while, busy working on the second annual Cigar City Concours d'Elegance. At this point I'm not sure what we are going to do about the annual Barner's Bash aka the Winterfest. But this is a tech question: I installed a (set up by Skip Haney) distributor and rebuilt OEM coil several months ago in the '39 CS and everything has been fine until about two weeks ago when I discovered a split in a section of fuel line, letting air get into the fuel. I fixed that problem and now the engine will fire up and idle just fine, it even accelerates in first and second gear (up to a point) if I push it beyond the normal shifting rpm range is starts to break up. In high gear it's fine at lower rpms but, when I try to accelerate, it starts breaking up Looking for answers, solutions, suggestions. I've checked all electrical connections in the charging system and (I have not let any smoke out of the wires ) so I'm at a loss.

Vic

I had similar problem. Pulled plugs - clean - re-gapped also cleaned air cleaner and issue went away.

Another thought - condenser

I haven't checked the plugs, guess I'll give that a try.

If you are running Champion plugs, throw them away and replace them with any other brand.

I haven't used Champion Spark Plugs in almost 40 years. I run Autolite 216's.

Congrats Tony! I stopped using champion plugs back in the '80's when I went to get eight for my '53 Ford. Got home, opened up the package and six of the eight plugs didn't have the ground electrode on them. Poor quality control. That may be a thing of the past but I've never had a problem with Autolite 216's.

Why can't I blame Champions,when I buy 8,put them in a stock 51 Ford.and 3 of them die within a week?

Switched over to Autolite and never had another problem.

I have seen them fail in other cars, also.

Vic, it sounds like a fuel starvation issue at higher RPMs. How do the other fuel line connection points look throughout the system, electric fuel pump and mechanical fuel pump pass through connections?

Geez mate not sure how my engines can be so screwed up that they run so well on Champions!
I must be doing something really wrong. I must need educating on something. Just not sure what.

I did have a small split in one section of rubber hose in the fuel line. I replaced all those sections, even put a late model fuel pump (with the sediment bowl) that I converted to a pass through. Not showing any air in the lines (no bubbles in the bowl) the only other thing I can think of is the fuel pressure regulator, I had it set at 2.5 psi. I'll put the car up on the lift tomorrow and check to make sure the setting hasn't changed. More fun with Flatheads.

Talking Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour

Thanks to those of you that were concerned about my whereabouts and wellbeing. I'm still here playin' with Flatheads and promoting the Cigar City Concours d'Elegance, an antique, classic, exotic and special interest automobile event I launched in Tampa Bay. As you might surmise, creating, structuring and implementing an event of this nature is no easy task, certainly not for the faint of heart. Happy to report that the inaugural event was a success and a valuable learning experience that has helped me make a number of improvements to implement in the second annual Cigar City Concours d'Elegance this November 9th & 10th. Much to the chagrin of my detractors here on the FordBarn, reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated. https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/attac...1&d=1572461435
