Default Repair of F1, F100, F150 steering box

I just test drove my car after repairing the steering box. I have a 1953 F100 box. I bought a new Sector Roller Gear with Pin Kit, part number 5360SG, from CPP Classic Performance Products, in Placentia, California, www.classicperform.com. The parts are good quality. I did not have to replace any of the other parts in the box and the rest of front end had been rebuilt before I bought the car and is in good condition. That sector roller kit is good from 1953 to 1960.

I went from 3 inch slop at the rim of the steering wheel to zero. I am very pleased with the result. There is lots of available adjustment now where before all of the adjustment was taken up.

The old sector roller was original and the pin had been heat staked by Ford using some heavy duty machinery. I ground out the stake on one side and pushed out the pin. The pin is hardened and cannot be staked like a soft rivet. I used my wire welder to secure the pin, using short welds with lots of cooling between welds. The hardness of the pin where the needle bearings ride was not effected by the welding. I had to grind clearance at the corners of the pin following the grinding done by Ford. The trust washers required grinding 0.005 inch off of one because the new roller was that much longer.

I am a happy camper.

I have used CPP Classic Performance steering parts on several of my old cars and trucks.
They are IMO the best quality parts you can find, and they also manufacture some of if
not all of their steering kits.
