Default Canister filter for '52 8BA

Trouble in Paradise ! My '52 8BA came to me with no oil filter canister. I got what I thought to be a correct canister from a friend. It has the common 3 bolt mounting flange. I went to Napa and asked for a drop in filter. What I took home doesn't fit the canister. The center stud in the canister measures ..565 in. The center hole in the Napa filter is .775 in. Inside diameter of the canister is 4.470 in. . Napa filter diameter is 3.940. Can someone help with a correct part number or offer a possible solution ?

Here you go. Take your pick. WIX is highly recommended. I am using a Puralator P-34 right now that I saved from years ago.

I think the NAPA filter you want is 1006.

It appears that NAPA 1006 and WIX 51006 are the same.

19Fordy, I wasn't clear in my initial post. I supposed that because the canister that I got from my buddy that it was generic to Ford Flathead V8's. My canister has no drain plug. It measures 8 inches from the face of the cap hold down bolt to the raised surface for the fitting at the bottom of the canister. If it wouldn't be too much trouble could you give me dimensions for the filter that you run ( provided that you have one in your cupboard.) I just checked the speck sheet for the Napa filter that you listed. They appear to be what I want. I'll give it try. Thank You .

John,, The measurement on my canister from the smooth surface of the bottom of the bolt when the lid is bolted down to the bottom raised area where the return oil line fitting goes is 7 1/4 in.
The ID of the canister is 4 3/8 in. The OD of the canister is 4 5/8 in. The length of the the hollow threaded tube that the top bolt screws into to hold down the lid is 5 1/4 in.
The filter that fits this filter is the NAPA 1006. I have a canister like this for sale if you decide you need one. Hope this helps. Jim

My local NAPA shows a 1004 part number. Been using them for years. The Wix equivalent is 51004.

I just noticed that NAPA lists the 1006 for flatheads through 1951. It's what I use in my '51. They are widely available, as they seem to fit just about any gasoline tractor out there.

Did Ford change in 1952?

Yes, the Cockshutt 50 tractor with Buda six engine takes the same oil filter as most of the flathead V8s I have known. Fram C4 was the popular one here. Baldwin has a good online cross reference catalogue. Seems to me the name "Kralinator K55" is on the lid of some of the filter cannisters. If memory serves me the truck engines took a slightly longer oil filter.

As an addition to "tubman"s 1951 observation re: the canister, the 1953 canister I have using the 3 separate 3/8 mounting bolts uses the WIX 1006 filter. When installed the top of the filter fits even with the top edge of the canister. The bottom of the filter sits on a round washer secured to the base of the center tube.

Bruce, That info about WIX 1004 filter also fitting is interesting. In the application shown here, it does fit tractors, heavy equipment and cars.
