Default Spark Plugs

I want to buy a set of Champion H-10 Sparkplugs for my 1940 Convertible for judging purposes. Does anyone know who sells the repro's of these?

No one reproduces the proper (two rib) H-10 plugs. There was set of (9) on eBay just last week for $700. I think they were also listed on the Early Ford V8 Club website. In my opinion and experience, that's quite pricey. Rebuilt plugs typically sell in the $50 - $60 (each) range.

I did work with Champion a number of years ago and they were willing to reproduce the plugs exactly as original. A minimum of 100,000 plugs were required as an initial order. Only around a $1 each but I knew quite well that I'd never sell enough to get my investment back.

I'll bet Champion would charge more than that now. Plug technology has changed quite a bit for automotive applications. We use a fine wire single electrode (Iridium) plug on most of our Lycoming engines. They are in the ball park of $105 per each plug and getting higher every year. In a 4-banger we use 8 plugs and in a 6 we use 12 plugs since there are redundant ignition systems. If you do the math they're damn well stupidly high priced. Needless to say, we only replace them when they no longer pass inspection and test requirements. They can last up to 800-hours but the average is about 600-hours.

I still find the later H10 plugs but those early ones, not so much.

Here's a comparison of the 2 rib and 5 rib design for those that are not familiar with the difference.

Thanks for posting the comparison pics Don. I'll have to look through some plugs I removed from old FH engines years ago to see if I have some pre war two rib versions.
I suspect the additional ribs may have been added to help prevent over surface tracking by providing more distance to ground.
