Is the engine running properly ?

A new cap should be vented correctly. But look at the underside, remove the gasket and look at the vent hole[s].

unhook your gas line from your carburetor and put the end of line in a can, turn on the gas and see if it run free for a minute or so. if it slows down at all open the cap. if it is not vented good enough. you will see the difference in the flow.

Is this a new to you cap or a brand new cap? Is it a reproduction cap?

It sounds like you have a radiator cap.

Lay the cap on a flat surface bottom side up. Fill the outer rim with water and blow through the vent hole with a straw. Bubbles should appear in the outer rim. See attached article.

The radiator cap is smaller than the gas cap.
