rear axle bearing sleeve
I'm in the process of rebuilding a 39 rear axle that has previously been rebuilt by another individual. Never been run, however, my customer has had a another rear end built by the same guy and it failed after minimal mileage, hence, he doesn't trust his workmanship, and has me redoing it all....I digress..
The axle housings have been resleeved, however, the assembled drums will not slip on all the way. I measure the installed sleeves at 2.163-2.165. I'd have thought 2.162 would be a more appropriate size, however, can any member give me the original Ford specs for the bearing races? Hoping I can spin these in the lathe and use toolpost grinder to 'tickle' them up. Hopefully I can swing them with those rearward protruding spring hangers. Thank you in advance, Brian

Yeah cas, I too remember Mart's trick... Thanks.
After I posted this question, I did a search of other threads. Found the dia should be between 2.063- 2.061. So thanks everyone, please ignore. Cheers.

Re: rear axle bearing sleeve
Brian I too found a drama with those sleaves, some as soft as,also be carful ,the id of the axle tube is WAY larger than a 33/34 or Model A, and if you use the sleave the vendors sell you will only have 3 or 4mm wall thickness on the 39,I have a set of 39 axle tubes at the machine shop,(my lathe wont spin them with the large spring hanger),And we are pressing a sleave in to the id to bring that diameter up to a 33 size, then you will have a better margine.
You can also use an old sleave that has a way smaller wall thickness. let me know if you want some pics . Lawrie |

Re: rear axle bearing sleeve
The sleeves sold during the years has come in all flavours...the worse was the ones coming from Argentina..still have some that aren´t even ground completely on the outer race.
I gave up on the quality and make my own now from SKF bearing steel. A lot of people think the pressfit should be as much as you can make it...and that affects the outer diameter !! |

Re: rear axle bearing sleeve
A sleeve can be pinned to prevent rotation so that the interference fit doesn't have to be too high. They do that inside the helicopter transmissions all the time since they use magnesium castings with steel inserts. If the sleeve is replaced, just drill the pin and removed the old sleeve. Install new sleeve and drill a new pin hole. They have been doing this in aviation for years.
A person can fabricate a tool to lap the new sleeves if they are just a bit too large. It doesn't take much lapping to remove .001" from a surface. I've lapped crank pins on the Harley Davidson engines on a few occasions. Last edited by rotorwrench; 02-24-2019 at 10:22 AM. |

Re: rear axle bearing sleeve
Not sure, but I think C&G and john both have the same sleeves.
[email protected] John Connelly columbiatwospeedparts.com 951-719-4077 info from V8 Times for whatever it's worth, I have some C&G sleeves that I will offer at a reduced rate. I no longer need them. Packaging says USA Made, R-58C, Double Heat Treated. Last edited by bobH; 02-26-2019 at 04:46 PM. |
