1938-39 Truck Cab details

Hi I am wondering if anyone can help with the original paint colours for a 1938 Ford Coupe ute Please.. It is was known to be a dark blue....

Ali: Don't know if this will help, but attached is a letter I rec'd back in 1975 regarding a similar question I had about a 38 PU. Finally getting around to restoration (just 42 years later ). I went with black since that was the original color. Good luck. Bill

An old thread revived..

Some mentioned, some can be added to my list or corrected if you think it's wrong. Just off the top of my head...

38/39 cab differences.
• 38 had the T handle windshield opener that came straight out the dash, 39 on top with a dial type knob.
• 38 had cardboard door inserts, 39 had metal.
* 38 had window and door handle echelons (I think they are called that) with spikes to set in the cardboard, 39 did not.
• 38 had an ashtray between the throttle and choke, 39 did not.
• 38 single windshield wiper, dual option in 39. (debatable)
• Horn and light knob designs different in 38 vs 39.

Body differences.
• Cab mounting wood for 38 was similar to the 37 version but with a elongated tail (one piece) to accommodate the bed, 39 was 2 pieces.
• In the grill in 38 had the v8 emblem, 39 did not.
• Hood opener was free floating in 38, was "molded" in 39.
• The share tire lock hub cover was black in 38, in 39 it was chrome to match hubcaps.
* Hubcaps differed in 38 commercial was a large V8 indent without ring. 39 I'm not sure but it's different.
• Inner front fenders have no provision for mechanical brakes in 38.

engines & mechanical:
• Early 38 had a 21 bolt 221, mid-late 38 and 39's had a 24 bolt 221 flathead.
• 38s had a chandler groves carburetor, 39 was the first Holley on the ford.
• 38 was the last yr for mechanical brakes in small trucks, 39 first yr for hydraulic brakes. (how ever most all holes are present for conversion in 38 trucks).

I'm sure there is a lot I missed and someone with more knowledge can add. As always some cross over happens at the factory or yrs of swapping things out.

Once you get to the grill, there is a difference. The 1938 grille has a three piece center with curved trim and a V-8 at the top. The 1939 grille has a one piece center with flat trim and no V-8 on the top. The trim ring around the outside is the same for both years. I found out the hard way.

I think the 38 grill and hood handle is far prettier than the 39 ,,,,,,and I own a 39 ! Great to see this thread back up !

No real progress on the '39, sure would like to know who makes a good set of body blocks. Should have a chassis here in a week or two. Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas! Bob
