Default 34 banjo with tube shocks?

Removed the bed from my 34 pickup today to begin getting frame ready to repaint. I see the banjo rear has tube shocks on it. Top shock mount is welded to x member and bottom bracket is bolted to bottom of axle housing. Was this common practice back in the day?

this was a pickup my dad had back in the day. It’s got 59a flathead, 39 trans, and hydraulic brakes.

I did something similar to my '32 sedan about 15 years ago. I made a bolt-on lower bracket that utilized the two wishbone bolts, and a bolt-on boss on the front side of the crossmember. My shocks are eyelet style, not stud.

It's a tight fit in there, with that curved spring.

Is that square nut on the spring shackle correct? It looks like there's a lot of slack between the shackle bolt and the spring as if the spring bushing has worn away.

very common application during the '40's-50's.. Good original Ford lever shocks were hard to come by and expensive. The late '40 Fords came with tube shocks front and rear, the stock set up was very easy to adapt to an EFV8 without welding.

Yes, spring bushings are gone. In fact, both spring eyelets are bound up against the shackle bolts. I doubt square nut you point out is correct but they will be replaced with new ones when I remove rear suspension to inspect, clean, repaint, replace or repair what needs it.
