Steering column question
I need to remove the bolt that clamps the steering column on my 1940 PU. It's the one that secures the column hanger/ ignition switch/ steering shaft lock. I've read where an easy out was used. suggestions please.
Thanks |

Re: Steering column question
Will this help?
https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...column.989834/ Be very careful with Easy Outs as they can easily break off. Then you really have a BIG problem. |

Re: Steering column question
I have always drilled a series of 1/16” holes across the head and used a screwdriver. You end up with a usable original bolt.

Re: Steering column question
I'd suggest removing the gauge cluster so you better access the bolt. Through the gauge cluster opening, attempt a locking pliers. There is typically enough material remaining on that bolt to grasp it well. Nearly always, this method has worked for me. If not, cut a slot in the head of the shear bolt and use a screwdriver.

Re: Steering column question
I seem to recall that I used a small pair of vise grips behind the dash to clamp onto the threaded end of the bolt that extends through the dash and was then able to turn the bolt enough so that I could clamp a pair of vise grips onto the head of the bolt and literally back it out. It's been about 40 years but, that's what I recall.

Re: Steering column question
I think that we are talking about different bolts.
I am referring to the 2 bolts that secure the column drop to the bottom of the dash in a 1940 Ford car. A photo would help. Is this the bolt under discussion ? https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showt...umn+drop+bolts Last edited by 19Fordy; 08-16-2021 at 10:24 AM. |
