Default valve locks break

hello guys, this week end i remove the valve cover to change his gasket, and i found few parts break it's look like the locks of the valve.... does anyone know where come from the problem ?

I would say either old age or incorrect valve adjustment.

I would replace all with hardened locks (and maybe retainers) say from COMP or ISKY CAMS.

Valve guides good?

i don't know ...i don't removed it.. when i've remove the spark plugs there's oil on them ...

I would think you could buy a 56 FORD SHOP MANUAL in FRENCH.

You will find the DIAGNOSTIC SEQUENCE(s) there.

Was the plug fouling oil and/or fuel do you think? Were the valve seals good? How many miles? Has the engine ever been rebuilt?

1956 FORD of CANADA 312, right?

no it's 272 ci... the car come from ontario canada..
i don't know how many miles
i have 1957 ignition
i have the red book" 1956 ford shop manual" us original
i think it's oil

Good, then you can read ENGLISH then? That's a big help.

... whew...

You would have to run a compression check and leak down test to see if the rings are good. Usually a bad valve guide/seal will leave a burnt deposit on the plug. If it (plug) is black/wet and doesn't smell of fuel, than you may have a major oil control problem unless the plugs are too cold or the IGN is not up to par.

I call them valve stem keepers, but I think they would be very difficult to crack and still would not be able to fall out because there is always some pressure on the valve spring even when the valve is all the way closed (up).
In 1973, on a very cold winter morning, I went out to start up my 272 and heard a knocking sound. It was a valve stem had become slightly bent and stuck in the valve guide, so the bottom of the valve was hitting the top of the piston. Even then the keepers were not damaged.
If you get a valve waaay out of adjustment, it is possible to bend a pushrod, but I doubt the keepers would be affected. Hard to say how one might become cracked.

PS; those keepers are furnished in halves (two pieces are needed for each valve), so if you are thinking it was broke because there are two pieces, it's not. It would never come apart if it was only one piece.

Dave is absolutely right that is the way they should be (2 piece) unless the oil is on the porcelain portion it is probably from oil leaking from the valve covers.this oil will run down the plug and will follow the threads and appear that the oil is coming from combustion chamber.if there is a tan coulored buildup on the porcelain portion then it may be oil leaking into the combustion chamber either from the rings or from the valve stem seals another reason is worn out guides.

If you found them just laying loose under the valve cover, they may just be some "extra" that someone left there when they were working on the engine. If they came off of a valve in the eng. , and missing from the valve stem, then one of the valves would either be stuck in the guide , or the valve would be bouncing off the top of the piston until it fell far enough to damage the piston. either way , the engine would most certainly run rough with a definite "miss" with the spark plug for that cyl. damaged, or at least oil, and fuel fouled. If the keepers were missing the spring, and retainer would also probably come loose and be laying there somewhere. show us a picture of that head with the valve cover off, so we can see what you have.

ok guys thanks for help me ,i've clean the cylinder head but i'm afraid if some parts break are falling down in the block is it possible?

sounds like you are comfortable tearing the engine apart.the only thing with the valve keepers on replacing is to make sure they are seated or you will be facing more than a miss when ----- good luck

A few rocker arms are off center to the valve but that may be normal for a Y block.

I see nothing wrong. I suspect that the keepers you found were left in there by accident from a previous repair. The off center rockers are common on y-block fords. this can be corrected, but requires a bit of fiddling around with the spring spacers and shims.

There 'ya go. I mis-interpreted the origional post. I also mis-interpreted the oil on the plugs. I thought he had pulled them.

I have enough trouble with the KING's English, let alone French ...
