Are 59A heads the same both sides?
If they are sided, I hope I have not put them back on wrong.
I put the one with number ending in LH on the 5678 side, USA driver's side, and did not really take much notice of the other, thinking it ended in RH. I saw another motor yesterday and I saw that the other one ends in BH, not RH. This BH one was on the 5678 side, and the guy said that was how it came to him. Now it has got me worried a bit. If I am wrong sided I hope it may only be where the temp sensor is and that is all. |

Re: Are 59A heads the same both sides?
My 1946 Canadian FORD MERCURY MONARCH shop manual states ''install cylinder head 6049 on the right hand bank, and 6050 on the left hand bank. Look for the part numbers on the heads as each will fit on the other bank but if put on the wrong side will set up an ENGINE VIBRATION owing to a difference in volume of the combustion chamber".
Hope this helps. |

Around that time, Ford had made some running design changes to the heads. The changes were in theory to provide better cooling. I am not certain if yours were post or previous to the change. Regardless, they will fit and function on either side. There was NO change to the combustion chamber volume so the only possible effect would be less than optimal cooling. FYI: The 6049 head is always the right side. The 6050 head is always the left side. Also, regardless of where the steering wheel is, the left side of the vehicle is ALWAYS the left side. This is ALWAYS determined when you are sitting in the front seat - looking forward.
