If you were looking to buy a B Carburetor and it did not have broken flanges, castings, stripped threads etc, what would be the worst thing that would make it unusable, just trying to stay away from yard ornaments.

Make sure ALL the parts are there. Many Model B carb parts are not available or difficult to find. A little thing that can cause big problems is frozen throttle plate and/or choke plate screws. If you can't soak them out & try to drill them, your success rate is pretty low, usually ruining the throttle shaft or choke shaft.

I've had good luck heating the throttle or choke plate screws red hot with the smallest tip on my accetelene torch. you've got to be carefull, it doesn't take much to heat the small screws red hot. I slightly tighten the screws before backing them out. If they will turn the slightest bit to the right, they will back out easily. This works for me, i've developed the touch, it may not for others. The first thing that I look for in a B carb is if the high speed jet is broken off in the upper housing. the high speed jet can be replaced but I prefer not to have to. as far as I know, throttle shafts are not available, I build them up with solder and file to size for fit.

You cannot go wrong with Vince Falter's stainless steel power jet tubes, IMHO. Otherwise, pay close attention to the GAV tube as these are not an easily replaceable threaded assembly as with the Model A carbs. Theythe are a press fit and can be a challenge to repair. I have run across more than few that were buggered up through careless handling.

Also watch for small cracks around the GAV tube due to excessive pressure force when installing the GAV tube. Also, small, almost undetectable cracks around the brass plugs.

fordgarage, the price of $15-20 sounds reasonable to me. Higher wouldn't turn me away since there are only used parts as an alternative.
