Dual Carb Banger
A couple questions for the Experts. I have a mildly souped up banger going in my Sport Coupe with a custom built header and a dual downdraft intake. The intake will have 94's. I'd like to get some jetting advice and fuel pump suggestions since the carbs will be above the tank.
Thanks in advance. Kevin Last edited by OoltewahSpeedShop; 05-26-2011 at 09:13 AM. |

Re: Dual Carb Banger
Stock jets and 3.5 power valves, direct linkage, a cheapo Professional Products® Powerflow fuel pump w/regulator set to 3 psi. The fuel pump wasn't installed when I took the picture, but I got tired of running out of gas going uphill with a half tank. I put the pump next to the name plate so I can hear it hammer if the gas valve is shut off. On the jets, start with stock and read the plugs after use.

Re: Dual Carb Banger
Kevin, another opinion is to use stock jets with the adjustable jets. My 94 carbs were rebuilt by Rudy Faltermeier from Spartanburg, SC (who I am of the opinion is the best on the east coast), and have a progressive linkage. On my 16 year old son's car, we are running 65 power valves but that is because I tend to run the mixture leaner on the mains since both accelerator pumps are strong.

How do you reach Rudy Faltermeier?

Got my BCCHOPIT flanges today. Very nice stuff. Can't wait to get started. I will show pictures of the progess.
Thanks for the advice. |

I just want to build the most user friendly intake for the 2x2 design. Thanks guys, Kevin |

Re: Dual Carb Banger
Both, and in my case, free. It is a good design that has been time tested and hard to beat if you are dealing with 2x2s. Part of the smoothness of the A was attributed to the balanced 4 cyliner air intake according to Murry Fahnestock. Through the years I have used many different manifolds, my first was made by cutting the front horn off of two stock manifolds but, the Thomas/Burns/Zephyr style just works good and maintains the air flow equal distances.

Re: Dual Carb Banger
The Thomas manifold also has only the single elbow turn per carb. I tried adjustable jets on Ford 92's, had a hard, that is, impossible, time getting everything balanced. Same with the power valves-the modern valves screw in but do not seat right. After spending most of the winter dicking around, sent mine off the Jere Jobe and he put in 5.5 power valves and .042 jets. Runs great now, but those sizes may or may not be right for your application. Its expensive, but I think it is worth having the pros rebuild and balance those carbs. There is a lot more to it than just replacing parts from a kit.

Re: Dual Carb Banger
So.... The Thomas intake doesn't have a balance tube between the carburetors? Just elbows to the intake ports?

No, the Thomas has the balance tube.

Re: Dual Carb Banger
Here are some pics of one of the best 2 carb manifold designs I ever came up with. Excellent instantaneous throttle response and better than stock gas mileage. Uses 2 Ford single throat Holley carbs. Very easy to fabricate also.

I bent the tubes but you could easily make it from exhaust pipe bends. If need be, you could make the flanges with a hack saw, a rat tail file and a drill. You don't need any fancy equipment for this project. If you don't have a welder, you can fabricate the parts and have them welded by someone with a welder. |

Re: Dual Carb Banger
This was made in the late sixties with standard U-bends, tube, two steel freeze plugs, a steel strap, a one-piece manifold gasket for a pattern and a welder that couldn't. The carb is a holly one barrel.
