Fire wall grommet
Just wondering......while making repairs to the firewall on a 31 Pick up, I filled the worn out GAV/Choke rod hole as it was quite ragged. I know from experience the repop grommets are not the sized right for the original Ford hole, so I would like to know how large to drill the choke rod hole.
Does anyone know the actual size of the reproduction grommets they are supplying? |

Re: Fire wall grommet
I think the one pictured in Gary's post is the upper grommet for the support under the tank. As I understand it, Ford did not use a grommet in the firewall just one on the choke rod on the engine side of the firewall held in place by a metal cup washer and the spring. See part #14760 in Brattons catalog. If you want to use the non-original grommet supplied in the kit Brattons can probably give you the measurements.

Re: Fire wall grommet
The cup washer and spring also had a small leather washer against the firewall.

Re: Fire wall grommet
This is the choke rod grommet that came with my kit. I know the leather washer and metal cup washer go in the engine compartment against the spring. However, this grommet is said to go on the firewall (inside?). If that is the case, how it is held against the firewall? Or does it also go on the engine side.....this grommet, leather washer, metal cup washer, then spring.
Sometimes the simplest things get over analyzed..... On another grommet issue, any tips on how to install the speedometer grommet? I slit the grommet and am struggling to get it installed. I did similar things for the headlight armored cable. |

Re: Fire wall grommet
Measure the hole. It may be easier to go to home depot than drill a hole. I forgot to put a choke rod set on my last order. I dug into some drawers and found a grommet that was a perfect fit for the lower and home depot had something to go in the top.
Walkerlakeprinter silicone spray will ease a tough to place grommet. The grommet I used I put on the engine side. Last edited by mike657894; 10-05-2019 at 12:46 PM. |

I have used that type of rubber on my choke rod with a flat washer. I put the rubber part on the firewall side, but don't use the leather or cup washer. It does go into the riveted plate that the starter rod goes through on a 30-31. |

Re: Fire wall grommet
Thanks, I think that it must be for a 1930-31. The kit says it is for 1928-1931, so that would explain it.
