I just replaced the throw out bearing tonight. The old one was worn out. My question is, should the new bearing have a lot of resistance or should it spin freely?

It may have some resistance as it is packed with grease.

It will free up the first time it is used.

Worn out?, whatever that means. Most TO bearings are only replaced when noisy. I re-pack them using a wheel bearing packer, and have not bought a new one in over 50 years.

It rattled badly when shaken you could hear loose pieces inside the bearing.
rather be safe than sorry later.

May I ask how long your throw out bearing lasted? I’ve been wondering about the lifespan of various components.

If treated well a throw out bearing will last a long time. May people sit at a long light with there foot on the clutch. That is just stupid and it drives me crazy. I say do you know how much trouble it is to change that throw out bearing.

Sitting at the stop light too long with the clutch depressed also not only wears out the throw bearing but it also wears out the crankshaft's thrust bearings. That increases the crankshaft end play which creates other problems too.

engine load under acceleration wears the thrust bearing way more than your leg ever will.

Original engines do not have thrust problems.

Rebuilt engines can have thrust problems.

If the bore in the big ends of the connecting rods are not parallel to the bore in the small ends of the connecting rods, there will be a thrust problem.

If the top surface of the cylinder block which is used as a datum to bore cylinders in a rebuilt engine is not parallel to the pan rail, there will be thrust problems because the cylinder bore is not perpendicular to the crankshaft centerline.
