8BA with Stromberg carb...NO.
Hi guys as in the heading I put a new Stromberg carb on my 51 F1 truck,it runs OK but " pinks" ...my good friend Bill from Florida investigated for me ,he contacted Stromberg and was told the Stromberg carb is not suitable for the loadamatic distributor as there is no vacuum takeoff on the carb,I connected a line from the redundant wiper vacuum port to the distributor and was informed it would have an adverse effect on the advance and retard so I disconnected it .
I,m gonna have to( sadly) import a new correct 51 truck carb, the problem I have is the Airfilter i,v got is the straight early type fitting and not the correct with the V fitting which is hard to find over here...would an early carb work good with an 8BA. and I,v looked but can't find an aftermarket small Airfilter unit with the V fitting which would be ok with the correct carb. Any advice would appreciated ,thanks. Jim. |

Use a car carb?
Or a Chevy distributor? |

Re: 8BA with Stromberg carb...NO.
In his original post the OP said : "the Airfilter i,v got is the straight early type fitting and not the correct with the V fitting which is hard to find over here". I take this to mean that his air filter is not the truck type (with the "V" shaped rim), but the car type with the straight rim. I think all he needs is a car type 8BA carburetor. I have never seen a 97 with a "V" shaped rim, so if his current air filter fits the 97, it will fit an 8BA car carburetor, but not the truck type.
OP, is this the correct read of your situation? Also, from my experience, "flatheadmurre" can fix you right up with whatever it is you need. |

Re: 8BA with Stromberg carb...NO.
The later (8BA) distributor is vacuum operated only, in comparison with the earlier fly weight advance, using vacuum for the retardation under load. The 8BA needs the carb vacuum tap that draws from above the throttle plate. Raw manifold vacuum will not work.
