I've left the pressure on my welder gauges for ~30 years between uses and never suffered a problem.

Hmmmm, I always thought leaving pressure on the gauges was a no no, maybe not ? Suppose anyone else will chime in with thoughts ? Other opinions are always welcome.

I remember the teacher saying to always bleed off the pressure every night, but I did not agree with him on a lot of things.

Hey Bob: Another potential issue could be related to the rod throws and soft plugs. In the very first flathead that I built (about 40+ years ago), had a late Merc crank in it - with the 5/8" or so soft plugs in every throw. Well, one day my pressure dropped like yours - I pulled the pan and found a softplug had blown out of the crank. I was not happy (as the machine shop put them in), but I caught it fast enough to just replace it and no harm done. Just something else to think about . . .

Angry Re: Serious question

Well , I finally opened the can of worms today and sorry I did. took out the mat, floorboards and short of either a fire wrench on the firewall or pulling the engine, I have no idea how in the Hell anybody could ever change or replace the oil sending unit on this engine ! Pretty discouraging . Not sure if the oil filter is in the right place or not, it is close to firewall. I have seen some mounted toward front. The horizontal port on side of block is taken up with a filter line also in the way. And I must have just missed having a fire as the hose from gas line to pump was rotten from the stinking gas you have to use now and crumbled in my hand . Must be time to get a 32 roadster street rod or 56 crown Vic. and be done with it ? I told ya I would let ya know how things went. (the Bud light I just had was not much help either !)

Look in the tool section at lowes or HD or HF for basin wrenches that might be modified for that special job. Also look at that special wrench you used to loosten the distributer hold down bolt on OHV engines. Cut off the box wrench and weld on an 11/16 open end.
You could even use it on that 32 roadster.

On your wasting wire on your welder. Release the wire feed and roll the wire back so you don’t waste any........Mark

Bob,

Can you put a floor jack under the oil pan to support the engine, then remove the motor mount cushions, then lower the engine? It may give you just enough room. You might have to loosen the exhaust..

The only way to get a good ground to your engine is to NOT put any thread tape or sealant on the bottom 2/3 threads of the sender. That means the first threads that go into the block or adapter must be clean. This will give you a good connection. The sealant on the threads above that point will take care of any thread tolerance issues and seal them up.
The same holds true on any adapter fittings that your sender might be threaded into.
thanks, great advice! what thread sealant do you recommend for this and for the other oil filter fittings which go into the block?
