winding of the Horn

Just wondering if anyone on the forum still rewinds their own Model A horns. I did two about 30 odd years ago and still have about 1/2 spool of the wire left.

Just wondering that's all.

Guess I don't have to wonder any more about how many rewind their motors.

My guess is that not many restorers rewind horns... probably because you normally don't have to. Cleaning up the armature, field coils, brushes, and commutator, then a drop of oil on each end of the armature, and adjustment is usually enough. Or, you can go the extra mile and replace the brush holders, brushes, and electrical connectors if they are badly tarnished or missing. I think 99% of the time, cleaning and TLC are all that's needed.

I have also rewound 2 horn fields, and that was about 7 years ago. I don't recall the number of feet each field winding took, but I'm thinking it was about 22 to 25 feet. I bought the copper enamel wire at the local surplus store, but that's pretty hit and miss whether they any to sell.

BTW, I learned that Bert's has original armatures and field coils if you want to rip the guts out of yours. They also have complete original horns.
