Default 1941 vs. 1940 Columbia Controls

I am thinking about buying a complete 1941 Columbia to install in my 1940 wagon. I know the housings are different but what about the controls? This Columbia comes with all 1941 controls. Anybody know the differences with regard to the controls from 1940 to 1941? The same or almost?

I have done a few back in the day.
As far as I know they will all interchange.
The. One I installed in my ‘46 had a push-pull knobthat matched the choke n hood release.
In one direction ( in or out , I forget) there was no vacuum. Move it the other way and when you push the clutch pedal down once it would allow the vacuum to pull it into overdrive.
I did a 47 or48 that had an electric switch, a toggle switch that you had to hold down while you pushed in the clutch and it shifted into overdrive.when you released the toggle the switch would go back up and the next time you pushed the clutch it would come back out of overdrive back to direct.

I have a number of cars with Columbia's. I made my own controls from
a Pollack electric fuel switching valve. The details were listed on this
site a number of years ago. Several of the people that rebuild the rears
thought it was pretty good and copied it and sold some. Shifts smooth
and drops out when you push the clutch in. G.M.

I recieved copies when I bought my car.
There was a series of chapters in the V-8 times on the Columbia's being the gem of the overdrives.
1994 was the year.
Otherwise John Connelly of "Columbia Two Speed Parts, LLC" is a wealth of knowledge on these.

1941 was the last year for the narrow rear axle. The spring hangar is different but can be worked around. The controls are about the same. The wider rear axle came along in 1942.

Can the horn (spike) be ground off the '41 axle housing to match a '40 housing? Why did they put this horn on the 41? What was it for?

On those odd ball 1941 rear axles, I think they were in preparation to install a panhard bar in the back but they just never got around to it. I think they finally did it in 1942 after they widened the axle out.

With the double barrel spring hangers, they may have been considering different springs too. Those 41 springs are a one year only deal.

So will these oddball '41 axle housings work with my stock 40 springs and shackles?

It should. The 1941 or 11A rear spring was for a heavier car so it had a higher spring rate but on the 1940, you would need the 1940 spring. Eye to eye should be the same between the two rear axle spring mounts (when using the stock spring shackle mounting locations). Most of the info I can find shows 1937 to 1941 to have the same spring mount position. I have a 1941 rear axle I can measure if you need to compare it to your 1940.
