Default 32 Door Checks

I'm back with yet another puzzle!

Here's what Bob supplies for 32 door checks.

Does the big plug go through the oval hole in the post from the outside or inside the internal braced pocket?

Which end of the flat strap goes through the door post, long or short?
From the hole diameters it looks like the short end with the cotter pin.

The remaining round rubber and washer go in front of the pin apparently.

The slotted brace inside the post that has two 10-32 screws in to clinch nuts. What are they for?

If they're for a strap there are no corresponding holes in the door. It has the two small tabs for the metal arm.

Thanks much!

Last question first as it points to what is not included in your kit. Those two screws are there to retainer a rubber pad about 1/8"-3/16" thick that matches up to the slot in the A pillar. The part number was B-46598 and was present on all '33 closed cars except the deluxe coupe and on cabriolets. It is shown in the lower left corner in the photo below. This pad can be readily made from sheet rubber of the appropriate thickness. Originally the pads were retained with wide head slotted truss screws.

The large 'plug', B-46590, fits on the end inside the A pillar with the wide end facing forward toward the firewall. It is the narrow end that contacts the rubber pad attached with the two screw on the A pillar.

The steel 'strap' that you have been provided was not made exactly as an original, but it will work. The curved end goes on the inside of the A pillar, the large plug is slipped over the strap narrow end first, then the slotted washer and then the cotter pin to prevent everything from sliding off the end of the strap.

All that appears on the rear of the A pillar is the steel strap attached to the clip on the front face of the door.

The smaller round rubber piece was not used originally on '32s

Thanks, David, for coming to the rescue AGAIN.

I have some rubber conveyor material that will work for the B-46598 pad.

The oval plug B-46590 acts as the actual bump stop then.

So there is nothing that fills the oval hole in the face of the A pillar?

Nothing fills the oval hole in the A pillar except the strap passing back and forth as the door is opened and closed. B-46590 does act as a stop, but as it is rubber against the rubber pad, it is a soft stop when the door is opened to its design limit.

I ran across the United Pacific door check reproductions on ebay and thought I'd share their illustrations. These are exact reproductions (except that they provide screws for the strap attachment to the doors rather than the original rivets). Note how the slotted washers secure the rubber sleeve and cup washer to the notched end of the strap. There's no mistaking which end is which with the original/UP version.

Thanks! Coincidently, I just saw those on the auction site we all love. Definitely takes out my confusion. Even has the flat square bumpers I just made and installed. Bob needs to upgrade his kit.
