? for Old Henry Moab,UT to Boise,ID by the scenic route
I'm on a quest this week. I am driving for the first time from Houston to Seattle to collect some family heirlooms. Dad is 95 and just moved to a retirement home. I'm wanting to drag a few things back to Texas that my dad owns. Not that I need them but for sentimental value. Today was Houston to Clovis by the back roads. Tomorrow we are going from Clovis,NM to Moab via Santa Fe and Durango, CO, a slightly longer but more scenic route.
I'd like a recommended scenic route/s from Moab to Boise. I'll be driving the route Wednesday and will check back tomorrow night. I hope to see the sites! |

I was south of Lubbock this morning, wondered where all of the old cars were headed, there was a bunch. Be safe

Mr Texas! I got the first leg for you: 346 miles from Moab to Green River Wyoming. Straight through on highway 191 all the way. You won't find a prettier route! Plan to make a stop at Flaming Gorge Dam Visitor Center along the way, and let your Pop dangle his feet in the water!
Hey! Don't forget the Arches National Park at Moab!

Re: ? for Old Henry Moab,UT to Boise,ID by the scenic route
Sorry I didn't see this earlier. I was celebrating my 43rd anniversary with AnnaRae.
This, of course, is the shortest route: Interactive: https://goo.gl/maps/8jKQ7YrkfzD2 This one adds the very scenic I-70 section from Green River to Salina then the old two lane Highway 89 north to Nephi where you get on I-15 for the rest. Interactive: https://goo.gl/maps/UJjTQFNGpjG2 This one adds a very nice stretch of "The Loneliest Road In America", US 50 from Delta, UT to Ely, NV. I love it. then north from Ely to Twin Falls: Interactive: https://goo.gl/maps/t8d7mszPivK2 If you want to add a bit more desert scenery and up into the mountains on the border of Nevada and Idaho on the Indian Reservation, here's the ultimate: Interactive: https://goo.gl/maps/wUYbTWndoaS2 All of the above scenery is very moving (to me) desert scenery. If you prefer getting up into the cooler mountains and pine trees this route is very nice. You can first stop and see the ghost town of Thompson Springs on I-70 (video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rF2EKYuQUlw), Sego Canyon just north of that (video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRZwHayxauQ) and/or Colorado National Monument near Grand Junction (video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpU2NKCV7nU). Then up through the mountains on the western edge of Colorado and up to Flaming Gorge National Recreation area to Fort Bridger, a very interesting historical site, and Bear Lake with its turquoise water, down through very scenic Logan and Sardine Canyons before connecting with I-15 for the duration. Interactive: https://goo.gl/maps/hjfSjypYEsD2 Or, you could stay on the two lanes further north along Bear Lake to the beautiful farming communities of southern Idano - Paris, Preston (of Napoleon Dynamite fame), Montpelier, Soda Springs, then through the Portneuf River Canyon to Lava Hot Springs then via I-15 to Pocatello and I-86 to Boise. Interactive: https://goo.gl/maps/uNrBGhE1bVn Of course, if you really want to take in most of southern Idaho, you would continue north on I-15 from Pocatello to Black Foot then go west through Atomic City and Arco to Craters of the Moon National Monument then on to Boise. Interactive: https://goo.gl/maps/k5zpM4CtcZq So, it all depends on what you want to see and how much time you have to drive how far. Any and all diversions are better than the shortest route that is mostly freeways. Whatever you do, don't miss Arches National Park 2 miles north of Moab. Video of my cruise through there: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdCSIlKAyZs If you have time, you could even take a little side trip on Potash Road and Shafer Trail up to Dead Horse Point (videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqe_DiViL-E and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOnKz-qRyuY). That road goes right by the potash ponds: then up Shafer Trail and ends up at Dead Horse Point from which you get this view: The Potash Road is the one seen in the bottom of the picture that you'd drive on. I drove all of that just a couple of weeks ago.

Well, back in Texas. Took 4 days to get to Seattle, stayed 3 days and then 4 days back to Texas. We took the shortest route thru the Utah desert. I enjoyed the pretty scenery. My 12 year old mostly slept all day and night! We stayed off the interstates mostly. On the return trip we stuck to the interstates and went thru Cody, Wy and Denver. Highlights of the trip were seeing hundreds of antelope in Wyoming, Mesa Verde, and Old Faithful. Been a while since I saw them but a first time for Nickolas aged 12. Lowlight was the gas jockey in Oregon who put the gas cap on loose and caused a check engine light. He did however wash the windshield!

Thanks again for the rides, I remember some of these and it was nice to travel through your neck of the woods (Or rocks) again.

Gotta love Oregon where they won't allow you to pump your own gas but at least its still cheaper than the crap they sell in California.
