Default "self" woodgraining

Greetings: Years ago I followed "tacoma" Bob Elms woodgraining on a 30 model a that turned out pretty well. His base coats and staining gel were for a mahogany trim. Now getting ready to do a 37 deluxe that has walnut trim. Any do-it-yourselfers out there that would know what base color and gel color would be close to the walnut? It is a driver and does not have to be a perfect match since I will be doing all of the interior woodgraining. Thanks for your time.

When I wood grained my '47 convertible I laid on the lighter background first, which is opposite of most instructions. Then, using an old brush with the end trimmed into an irregular form, I stroked on a darker color to produce the grain. When the appearance was finished, I applied a clear coat to protect the piece. Be sure the base coat is completely dried before tackling the grain, as i is likely you will have to wipe it off several times before you get the hang of it. Mine came out so well, some have asked me if it is actually wood.

Jenny Llewellyn here in the UK was the acknowledged expert, did Facels, Caddys etc as well as Ford's. Sadly like many craftspeople she passed on without training up a successor. Her secrets are lost.
