Default E-brake carriers & pivot-tube question ...

Have my '28 (late) down for some brake-work.

In the process of cleaning-up the emergency-brake carriers and installing new bushings in them, the bushing tube broke-free from the carrier plate on one side.

Looks like it was tack-welded in two spots somewhere along the line.

Does this tube have to be welded to the e-brake carrier, or is there enough clamping-force on the tube shoulders between the carrier plate and the backing plate to keep it in place ?

I'm not set-up to weld; although I have oxy-acetylene and could braze it in place... ?

Thanks in advance...

Frank I've seen a lot that have come apart with as little as two small spot welds. I don't think you'd have much worse with a brazing job and only you will know its there.
I usually put four or five good spots on with a MIG and have no trouble yet.

It needs to be secure. A MIG or TIG tack would be best as brazing is not a great way to fuze the metals together.

According to Bratton's catalog.... "Flange on tube must be hammered over or welded to carrier."

I have never seen an original tube welded to the carrier, they were originally swedged in place.

I used the brake stud swedging tool and my H/F 20 ton hydraulic press to swedge the tube in place. I used a long socket over the outside of the tube as there is a shoulder there. Worked great. Bratton's tube comes with new bushings installed. Send them your backing plate and they will install the tube.
