Generally polish refreshes the surface and wax seals and protects.
But there are combination polish/waxes that do the same thing in one step.

Car polishing happens before the wax job. The polish takes off contaminents and dead paint. Some will clay bar the car before polishing to get even a better looking shine. There are different grits of polish to use depending upon the condition and type of the paint or clearcoat. It is rated much like sandpaper.
Wax is a sealant which is of course applied after the polishing is completed. It is the protective layer between the elements and your car's paint. This is just a quick explanation. Google "car polish" for professional explanation.

Want a GREAT car polish? Try Mothers Mag and Aluminum polish is amazing. Also great for those modern clear coats and dull plastic headlight covers. It is basically a very fine grit compound.
Several posts on You Tube. Chap

Just an FYI and more so with the modern cars......I just did my wife's Lincoln MKX yesterday. I washed the car first! Dried with a shammy and then clay barred the car! Then I washed AGAIN with a clean bucket of soap, water and a new clean rag (cotton terry). Then I used Griots #3 fine polish on my variable speed random orbit polisher at about 4 out 6 speed. Then I waxed it......I like Zymol but getting to where I have to order that now!!! Once I've done that, I'll go about 3 or so times of just washing, clay barring, washing and waxing BEFORE I throw a polish in the mix again!!! IF you use a good carnauba wax don't forget to mist filtered water over the finished job and wipe down with a clean micro fiber to "Set" the wax!!!!

Here is a link to Maguire's, where there are lots of videos. I don't have a preference for suppliers, and have use several different brands over the years with varying success.
