Default 1933 fuel guage

Here is what I hope is a simple solution to my problem . my 1933 fuel gauge has got all kinds of gunk and staining of the gas gauge glass tube. The glass tube that you see the red fluid that shows the amount of fuel in the tank. I can clean the glass tube from the top. My question is what kind of chemical can I use to unblock the copper tube that goes from the filler or where the air tube connects to the gauge to the gas gauge glass tube. I don't want to ruin the glass. I'm wondering if phosphoric acid would clean the gauge and that tube without staining or etching the glass. are there Any other methods or chemicals that might work.

Lacquer thinner should work.

I have used acetone.I have heard that brake clean works also.Scrubbing in the tube with cotton rolled around thin wire gets it really clean.

I have used Lysol toilet bowl cleaner, without any effects on the glass. If you can get any through the small line it will most likely open, if zero flow from the tank to the glass, it may not open. The acetone does clean the glass and remove the old red deposits.

thanks for info. now one more question. I am also working on a temperature gauge actually a 1932 dual temp. The fluid in the temperature part is not red. It is almost clear. It seems to work properly as it goes up and down with heat and cold. I was told by someone who repairs them that the fluid that was originally used causes cancer. For that reason he doesn't repair them anymore. The temperature gauge I'm speaking of has a screw in the bottom of the temperature probe. I assume that it's like that because of the repair. I'm wondering is there a way to tint fluid? Also does anyone know who repairs these now? Thanks for any help.

The red dye used doesn't last a very long time. The ultraviolet light from the sun will degrade the color. Ther are several threads on this subject. You might try a search to find some of them.

The temp can be rebuilt, but the current fluid cannot be re-tinted. A full fluid change must occur. As for the fuel gauge, a mild acid helps to free the dried residue from the original fluid, but there could be several chemical steps depending on what your gauge has in it. You may be best to buy the NOS unit.
