1933 fuel guage
Here is what I hope is a simple solution to my problem . my 1933 fuel gauge has got all kinds of gunk and staining of the gas gauge glass tube. The glass tube that you see the red fluid that shows the amount of fuel in the tank. I can clean the glass tube from the top. My question is what kind of chemical can I use to unblock the copper tube that goes from the filler or where the air tube connects to the gauge to the gas gauge glass tube. I don't want to ruin the glass. I'm wondering if phosphoric acid would clean the gauge and that tube without staining or etching the glass. are there Any other methods or chemicals that might work.

Lacquer thinner should work.

Re: 1933 fuel guage
I have used acetone.I have heard that brake clean works also.Scrubbing in the tube with cotton rolled around thin wire gets it really clean.

Re: 1933 fuel guage
I have used Lysol toilet bowl cleaner, without any effects on the glass. If you can get any through the small line it will most likely open, if zero flow from the tank to the glass, it may not open. The acetone does clean the glass and remove the old red deposits.

The red dye used doesn't last a very long time. The ultraviolet light from the sun will degrade the color. Ther are several threads on this subject. You might try a search to find some of them.

Re: 1933 fuel guage
The temp can be rebuilt, but the current fluid cannot be re-tinted. A full fluid change must occur. As for the fuel gauge, a mild acid helps to free the dried residue from the original fluid, but there could be several chemical steps depending on what your gauge has in it. You may be best to buy the NOS unit.
