Re: Trqnsmissions casting numbers
The 78 number is the case used from '37 to '39. The gears inside may be '37-'38, or the more popular '39-'48.

Re: Trqnsmissions casting numbers
The 78 case was also used in commercials (light pickups) up till somewhere in early 1951. It's the one most folks use to build a what is known as a "39" transmission. The double detent shift tower from 1938 on is preferred. The gears from side shifters can be used in the top shifter to make up a torque tube drive application. Pickups had open drive after 1942 so the output shaft is different but the rest of it may have some value if the ratio is usable.
I have no idea on the other numbers. |

Re: Trqnsmissions casting numbers
The number is on the flat surface in front of the shift tower, 81A-7222.

Re: Trqnsmissions casting numbers
Ok, so I have 2 early and one 81A-7222. I couldn't find a casting number on outside of the early ones.
What are they worth, in good condition? Frank |

The early ones? Find someone that needs one and tell him "Any reasonable offer."

Re: Trqnsmissions casting numbers
That one, if it has the 91A forks, should be worthy of taking it to a swap meet. I'd probably clean it up nice and put a proper label on it saying what it is, and maybe ask $75 and take $50. Maybe a little more if it's complete with shifter and knob.

Re: Trqnsmissions casting numbers
The reproduction 91A shift forks are expensive but I think Mac VP is out of them. Who knows if they will be reproduced again. Originals is good shape are still worth a good bit since folks are always looking for the to upgrade the older transmissions. Mac is asking $175 so keep that in mind. Mac has a lot of info on his site to ID these old units.

Re: Trqnsmissions casting numbers
That's not to say they are the 91A forks. Look on the underside for the large 91A cast in numbers.

Re: Trqnsmissions casting numbers
I would love to have a good clean 39 DD top for a 25T LZ build I'm doing. (Spare trans for my 32 Cab). Anybody have a good clean one (with 3" fork) for an affordable price???
