Default Cylinder head

I have a model A cylinder head that does not have the oblong water passage in the center between cylinders 2&3. Can someone give me info on this. Should I use it? Daren

The oblong hole was introduced in Oct 1929.

Now that raises another set of questions. I would have to assume the blocks did not have that hole also? Has anyone seen blocks without this water passage. Was the introduction of the passage because of a heating problem I would assume) and if so what kind of problem. I was told that there would be better cooling around the valves without it. Last and most important question, Should I run this head.

The blocks had the hole, even when the head didn't.

I was thinking the same but that leaves unanswered questions. Why?

I wonder if what we think was a hole for coolant was actually a support for the casting core?

That would be my thought.

Found some information on the early cylinder head. From what I found it is recommended that the center water passage be drilled now on to the next questions. There are two other water passages that are a different configuration that is they do not match up with the block has anyone ran this head and what can you tell me.

Half the Model A's build had heads without the oval center hole, and I'd never drill mine.

If you are running a B block, then there are a couple small holes that need to be plugged so you don't loose coolant into the cylinders.
