Question on Trans Parts for a 39 box
So I bought Mac Van Pelts transmision book and have disassembled a 39 trans I have (with ZF gears) and a couple of 40 to 48 boxes. I have the pieces in individual boxes and have not co-mingled the parts.
I have at least one set each of the synchro assembly part 01A-7124 and the synchro assembly 51A or 8M-7124 ( page 21 in the book) I also have the two different types of cluster thrust washers. (page 25 in the book) Wondering which one is the best. I would assume that the latest is the best cus why was the change made. I have not determined which is the latest. Am using my 39 box and not using LZ gears |

Re: Question on Trans Parts for a 39 box
Thanks for buying the book. The 01A-7124 synchro assembly would be my choice because the inner hub on this one requires the 81A-7069 brass spacing washer....and these are available in two thicknesses (.064” and .070”). This allows you to pick one for the best fit on the end play. Dump the 3 ball and spring type inserts and use the later type insert kit instead (p/n 51A-7109-S for the three plated and two wire springs).
Assuming the cluster gears you want to use have the tooth count you need, and are in good condition, I lean towards the two piece type rear thrust washer type.

To be clear on this, the three plates do not need a spring underneath them? |

Re: Question on Trans Parts for a 39 box
If you use the 51A-7109-S insert kit, you have to use the two circular wire springs with the inserts. The springs are fitted beneath all three inserts, pushing them outward. The book shows how they are fitted. Staggering the two springs helps keep an even pressure on all three inserts.
