Hi guys .. I heard the water pumps vanpelt sell are pretty good.. any one have them ? Are they the same as drakes?

I am sure that the Vanpelt pumps are fine . For the record , I have a pair from Drakes that have worked flawlessly for 3 yrs . - F F

Carpenter told me they make their own. The black one is Carpenter's.

From the picture, it looks like the impeller is quite a bit deeper.

I know Dennis got heavily involved with casting plastic parts such as dash knobs and the like but I doubt that he has a foundry for casting iron. Most of the repro part peddlers buy parts like that wholsale from the source for retail sales including Speedway Motors. If they put casting marks for different peddlers then they contract purchase from the foundry or manufacturer. It's possible they even assemble them from contracted parts but I would be surprised if they made all the parts in house like Ford did. Few repro parts outfits go to this extent. The 1940 coupe body is a classic example of contracted manufactuer.

If you have your patterns any foundry will cast for you. More pictures of the pumps. The red ones are Skip's.

There is more to casting a set of pumps then just suppling a pump
casting. You have to have a core mold to make cores for the water
passages in the pump. Then after casting the core has to be broken
out. G.M.

Vanpelt has a new impeller design and sealed bearings. I tried to contact Him on the H.A.M.B. but haven’t heard back. I was thinking of getting a set but didn’t know if they were different from drakes, C&G etc . Where they were made and what the fit was like

C&G is just up the road from you and all their water pumps are 10% off this month with the code "waterpumps". Never had an issue with C&G. JMO

I have Carpenters. Drakes have "Drake" cast in them and my old ones were too bad to send to Skip. Everything works great......

I'm with Chap and 51504bat. C&G has a great video on water pumps, along with the special they're running. Kyle and Joe are part of that group of great people here who help us solve our problems!!! I wish I were as close as you are!!!

Why not contact them directly? Or you could PM him here on the Barn. He was on here today around 6:20.

Why all this guessing when WP's come up. Send yours to Skip for a professional rebuild. I have done this for 15 years and never a problem.

John, I agree with you and I've had Skip rebuild my pumps and I'm getting ready to send him another pair. I think the issues may be price. Drake's are advertised at $125 for the pair.

I also had my water pumps rebuilt by Skip 5 years ago. They work perfectly and move the water. I have had my '41 out a lot this summer in 90 + degree days. The temp has never risen over 180 degrees. I did also flush the engine and radiator while the pumps were at Skips. He has excellent turnaround time. Highly recommend.

Reproduction castings:

If you make a mold for an iron casting part from an original part you will loose at least 3% of the dimensions, maybe even more, depending on direction of the flow. And it gets worse from there. So then you go to a pattern and lose another 6%.

And that is why so much of the China stuff doesn't fit. You get what you pay for. IMHO

I have a bad batch of speedway pumps on one side (bad seals, the pump is solid fit). Leaks a manageable amount. very little, a drop a few months or less, on my list of replacement. Long list it seems....

If I could do it again I'd consider skip first then the rest. Just my opinion.
