Default Will a 35 Rear Drum work with Juice Brakes?

So, will a 35 rear drum work on 39 backing plate with juice brakes and 16" steel wheels?

They will work, but you need to grind off the 5 projections that are there to support the wire wheels properly. It's kind of a pitty though since that's a one year only drum that is sometimes difficult for '35 owners to find if they are still running wires. '40 to '48 drums would work for you with no modifications.

I have seen several sets of "35" rear brake drums for sale at swap meets, that were actually for a 1934 Ford. From the front they look the same with the raised tabs to support wire wheels, however the 34 has a much narrower shoe fit and they cannot be used with a 39-48 brake shoe. I once made a 4 hour round trip to buy a set of 35's and when I got them home and tried to use them I would find out that they were 34's, an expensive lesson to learn.......at the time I did not know they were different.....Matt in Alameda

In my experience the 32-34 rear drums are the same and have the tabs to properly support K-H wires....35 rear drums look very similar. They also have the tabs but they are wider and will work with the later shoes. They also have ribs or fins around the drum so they are easy to tell from the 32-34 style.

Are the 35 wheel bearings compatible with later rears? I thought there was a thread here about a bearing size change during 36?

The bearings themselves changed; but axle OD stayed the same.

I was going to bid on those red ones on Ebay, they looked very nice, but I'm using the spacer rings that go over the wheel lugs for my '35 wires, they work just fine.

I hope the rings that flat is referring to are those that go around the lug bolts and not those that emulate the lugs or rings from the spoke wheel drums that supportys spoke wheel to be used on post '39 drums. There are two distinct types. Good Luck: Fred A

I think this is the rings flat-V8 was talking about.

Or this might be the one. He said it went over the lugs.

Both of those ringsl, the one shown by CS and Tom do the same thing, one perhaps better than the other, and that is allow the use of spoked wheels on post '39 drums. If the match is the other way where use of post "39 wheels on earlier drums made mount spokers, the ring goes around the outside of the lugs. This simple thing has been a source of conflusion for eighty years. I like the use of '35 rear drums because they don't need any stinkin spacer to use wires. Unless I have early Zephyr backing plates, the '35-'36 spindles and drums are not worth the effort.
Good Luck: Fred A

If the hub is under the drum ( 39-40(?)) you have to use the simple ring spacer or the lug nuts will not fully thread on to the stud. The simple ring is thinner. If the hub is on the outside ( 41-48?)you can use the Speedway spacer, which is thicker, that goes over the lug nuts...this drum has longer studs. This spacer is easily removable, while the simple ring has to be epoxied on. ...When I expressed my concerns about the lug nuts being not even flush to studs to Richard Lacy in Southern California, he explained the differences to me and was kind enough to trade the set I had for the correct ones as I had bought a lot of my brake parts from him. Hope this helps someone..........Matt in Alameda
