BIG problem 2
Got started at 9:30 this morning pulling the engine in my 36 phaeton.
Got it loose and up on the lift at 11:00 but the lift cylinder was low on jack oil and wouldn't go high enough to clear the grill so it took an hour to get the grill out. Pulled the timing cover off the front and the fiber gear looked real good. Drained the oil and pulled the pan the bottom end looked like it was rebuilt last week, no sludge or metal found. Pulled left head and found surface rust in the two center cylinders, a hole at the top of the rear cylinder about 1/2" X 1 1/2"s. Pulling the rear rod found one nut had cotter pin and the other nut was a locking type. Pulled rear piston and had a split from near top to bottom of skirt. The C & R cylinders have some small vertical scores. From the looks of the two different nuts on the rod it looks like there was a problem on the cylinder over 30 years ago before I got the car. All the other rod nut had cotter pins. The left head also had a crack from the center top stud both up and down into the large water holes. Everything on the right side lookedgood. This engine ran and sounded perfect before the problem. G.M.

"a hole at the top of the rear cylinder about 1/2" X 1 1/2"s."
Do you mean a hole in the cylinder or the piston? What do you think you will do to get it up and running again? (Or is it too early to say?) Good luck with it. Mart. |

and put in two new pistons. Will check rods good to make sure they are not bent or twisted. I have another engine I may stick in. Will decide tomorrow. G.M.

is hanging. First job this morning is lower the engine on wood blocks. Pan is off then fill the jack and put the engine on an engine stand. It's hard to work on swing around about a foot off the floor. The oil is all in the cylinder now and there is very little jack movement at the bottom of the stroke. Worked good when we started.Hard to work on swinging around but was curious to see what the problem was. G.M.

Re: BIG problem 2
This morning BAD turned to WORSE. Didn't have much time but pulled
some of the parts off the 36 engine. The pictures tell some of the story. I had to leave at 11:30 so we pulled the plugs out of the used engine and squirted almost a full can of Rust Buster in the cylinders, turned the engine about a turn and used almost the rest of the RB. Will let soak over night. Tomorrow will put mechanical oil pressure gauge on and spin with 12 volts to see what OP will be a 45 MPH. Checked oil and it must have been drained when the engine was pulled so put in a gallon. Will also do a compression check. This info will help me decide if I want to use this engine. I think I have a few others so I will look and see what's hiding in the shop. G.M.

Re: BIG problem 2
Hard to believe that all that happened on a short little jaunt. Did you run this engine without any previous knowledge about it's history and without opening it up a bit? Nice stock of engines waiting in the wings!

Winner, winner. Chicken dinner.
Use another of your good engines. After all, what are you saving them for? |

Re: BIG problem 2
I agree X 3 with Lawrie. You said you heard pinging, and that's what the piston with the hole in it looks like.

Could it be hydrolock damage?

Could become a candidate for the line-up on a Seattle wharf, headed to China so they can make more quality parts for us

That looks bad G.M. I know you will have that '36 back on the road soon. I keep buying up engines too just for instances like this.

Re: BIG problem 2
So GM - are these pictures from TWO different engines . . . or only one? I'm hoping only one engine gave up it's ghost. That piston sure does look like detonation killed it -- the cylinder -- appears it has had some issue for awhile.
Good luck building another engine - seeing those pictures sure sucks! D |
