33 Exhaust sizes

Hi All, looking for conformation on exhaust sizes for my 33 fordor.
cross over Pipe 1-1/2" and 1-3/4" for muffler & tailpipe
I couldn't find it the green book. Not to say it isn't there though.

Keith, I just measured a new exhaust system from Waldrons I installed in my 34 fordor. Same as 33 I'm not sure. The cross over pipe measures 1.5" OD at the joint end. the header pipe measures 2" OD at the expanded end where it meets the muffler inlet. The tail pipe measures 1.5" OD where it meets the muffler outlet. I believe the gage is 14 so you can calculate the ID's if needed. A quick email to www.waldronexhaust.com might also be of help. I'm not sure they build to all original dimensions but everything sure fit nice and is top quality.

Hit the wrong button. What I was going to say, " It would be nice to pick up the phone and order a system from Waldrons but the cost in getting it shipped to AU is a bit much.
Will just have to put up with our local so called "Exhaust Specialists."

Hi Keith, I get it with the shipping cost. Even ground shipping here is significant. But, while on the 33, 34 exhaust subject, I thought I would throw this out. I have two projects, a 34 fordor and a 34 5 window coupe. The fordor is a USA car with left hand drive. The five window is a RHD car from Argentina. I put a new Waldrons exhaust in the fordor and it went in with no problems, really nice. So I called them and asked if they had a system for the RHD 34. "No we don't at this time" was the answer. OK so I got looking at the LHD system and it looked like it would fit in the RHD car so I ordered it. It fit great, cleared the steering box with no problems. However the floor in this car has been replaced with one from a LHD car. The battery box is on the left. If the battery box on RHD cars is on the right then the LHD system will not work. So, did Ford put the battery box on different sides with the different drives? I assume you have a RHD car. Is the battery box on the right?

Right hand drive has the battery on the right ,exh goes down the left

Yes Lawrie has it correct. My33 is RHD and batt box is on the drivers side.
There is a cutout on the left hand side which I guess is for LHD, there is a timber cover over it the same as the drivers side.

Keith,you could shift the battery over to the left but would end up with the muffler under your feet.

Lawrie, I installed the new bolts today the crossover and Y piece come off together very easy with the exhaust cut just before the muffler. Will now ask the exhaust place to install one flange only. Sounds great with no muffler though.

I thought I was going into the exhaust Bis once so spent a lot of time making up jigs, for RH ones, don't forget the muffler in pipe goes under the chassis Ted

Hi Ted, not sure what you meant by "muffler in pipe goes under chassis" my 33 & Lawrie's 33 the in pipe to the muffler goes through a hole in the chassis?
Is this incorrect ?.

Hi Keith .Yes that's incorrect ,it should come from the hocky stick at about 2 " OD , then in a z shape drop down to clear the wish bone then into the muffler at 6-0 oclock under that x member ,unlike 35 s that go through the hole ,Ted

In response to your question regarding LHD and RHD floor pans, bodies destined for LHD chassis had a single battery access hole on the left side of the floor pan and bodies destined for RHD chassis had battery access holes on both sides. This was necessary to accommodate both the RHD V8 exhaust system (routed originally on the left side) and the four-cylinder exhaust system (always routed on the right side, LHD or RHD).

Ted ,are you sure the pipe goes under the frame,that would be very vunerasble hanging down there,

Yes Ted is correct, the 2"inlet pipe into the front of the muffler goes under the X frame member, NOT through the hole in the X frame on the 33-34 V8 engine Ford. That is for both RHD and LHD cars. Regards, Kevin.

Just another point, I think on the muffler outlet pipe on the LHD cars it is directly opposite to the outlet pipe on a RHD muffler. ie 9 oclock as against 3 oclock positions. This means that if you are using a new LHD reproduction muffler on your RHD car then some tweaking/bending at the front of the tailpipe may be required for the tailpipe to line up nicely with the muffler outlet. Kevin,as I said,that would be vulnerable under the chassis would you think.I bet they got damaged easy.

Well there is always something new to learn about flatheads. I'm going to stick with the through the chassis setup ( correct or incorrect) as the muffler is lined up and only needs a a 2" piece flanged to the Y junction. I don't do much off road but I like it up there out of the way.
