6 or 12 volt
I know I have seen the answer to this many times in the Ford barn, but what year did Ford go to 12volt neg earth?

Depending on what you're working on this added info may be helpful... Most electrical parts were changed from 6v '+' ground to 12v '-' ground for '56. There was another change to the Dash Gauge circuit from '56 to '57. '56 gauges were built for a full 12 volts, '57+ gauges use 12v power, but there is a voltage reducer/regulator in-line before the gauges. (two example photos below) .
