Default 226G vs 226H

I'm thinking of going to the H 226 to replace my G 226. Will the H set right in place or will some mods have to be made for the motor mounts.

I've had nothing but headaches and problems with this motor from day 1,
overheating, parts problems (oil pump parts arent available i had to have a machine shop work on the body) gaskets are becoming harder to fine
Its a pain in the butt to work on the distributor,
belts arent available for the generator/fan - has dual belts setup which is hard to get/keep in adjustment

shall i keep going?

I wish I knew if the H would be a direct bolt in or not to replace the G six. Seems like your getting responses, but just questions for you instead of answering your original question.

Maybe if the original post's title mentioned 6 cylinder. I didn't know what the heck he was talking about until Mercman posted those photos.

Sorry 34pickup, i will make that clear in future posts

And theres a major difference still between the G and the H, those pics are the G.
I also found out theres a M six, in big trucks I think not sure.
But from looking at YouTube vids it appears the motor mounts are the same.
I kinda assumed so since they were both put in 46s Fords, the G early on until they ran out of them and then they went to the H motor.

The idea of an "M" engine (I believe they were 254 ci), intrigues me. Properly set up, I'll bet it would surprise a lot of guys with V8's.

The H should have the bosses on the side for the same style motormounts as the G...have to go down and check a block to make sure they are drilled...
A lot of the H engines had a central front mount attached to the timing cover area.
I ran a 254 in F1 a couple of years back and with a bit of milled head that engines has some serious torque !!

The H should bolt in using the donut motormounts...
This engine came out of a later pickup.

Then if it were mine, I keep and fix the G. Cooling problems may be related to the radiator not the engine. Crabs & helmets set right are probably more reliable than loadamatics and don't need much attention. I bet VanPelt has a lot of the G parts you might need. Jack E/NJ

The pickups with H engines should have the correct stuff to bolt up the trans and clutch. I thing the Ford cars from 49 with the H engine had different mountings and transmission plate than the pickup but it's been a while since I've worked on one. I've heard of folks doing the swap before. The mountings & transmission plate are all bolt ons.

I wonder how much military G type surplus is still out there. They made quite a few G8T trucks during the war. The stuff might be in Russia though. We gave them a lot of those under lend lease.

I have an H in my 41. Like Rotorwrench said, I had to use the engine back plate and bellhousing from the truck as well as the motor mounts.
I believe the main differences between the G and H are the distributor and oil pump. If you are worried about finding parts, the H is not any better than the G. I have a hard time finding parts.

FORD 7HA 226 CUBIC INCH FLATHEAD 6 CYLINDER ENGINE IN GOOD CONDITION, on EBay.

It's close to me. That's the one I'm considering. Actually I've made an offer based on the contingency it fires my car.

It should actually be a pretty much direct swap. Your flywheel, bellhousing and motor mounts should all bolt to the H series engine. I had a V8 in mine and was able to use the flywheel. So a lot of those parts are pretty much interchangeable. If it is in good condition and a good deal, go for it. I have heard that the H series is better than the G. You can adapt different distributors to get rid of the load-a-matic.
